Physiology
the branch of biology that deals with the normal functions of living organisms and their parts
Associated symptoms
pertinent positives; symptoms associated with the patient’s chief complaint
Pertinent negatives
not having something can rule out an illness for providers
Chronic
an illness that the patient has had for 3 months or longer and will likely persist
Acute
new injuries and illnesses that started less than 3 months ago
Comorbidities
The simultaneous presence of two chronic diseases or conditions in a patient; increases a patient’s complexity and health risk; treatment of one disease may affect/contradict the treatment of the other; increased risk of organ failure if both illnesses affect the same organ
