Hyperlipidemia (HLD) Flashcards
Hyperlipidemia (HLD)
“high cholesterol”; the fats from food turn into fatty deposits in the arteries causing decreased blood flow or a complete blockage
Risk factors
obesity, high lipid diet, physical inactivity, FHx, DM, alcohol use
Dx
bloodwork measuring cholesterol and triglyceride levels - elevated LDL
LDL
low density lipoprotein; type of cholesterol that causes lipid build up in the arteries; “bad” cholesterol
HDL
high density lipoprotein; collects fatty deposits to take back to the liver; “good” cholesterol
Symptoms
asymptomatic
Treatment
statins - medication that blocks a substance in the liver used to make cholesterol starting a feedback loop to remove cholesterol from the arteries through reabsorption
