Hypertension (HTN)
high blood pressure; thins out the walls of the arteries because of excessive force
Risk factors
FHx of HTN - genetic predisposition; obesity; DM; high sodium diet; smoking; alcohol
Chief complaints (CC)
often asymptomatic; hypertension present when measured at home; when severe causes headache, chest pain, palpitations, blurred vision, epistaxis
Physical Examination (PE)
lower extremity edema, carotid bruit, jugular venous distension (JVD), abnormal heart sounds
Diagnose (Dx) by
BP check and monitoring with sphygmomanometer
Hypertensive BP
> 140/90
Prehypertensive BP
121/81 - 140/90
Normal BP
90/60 - 120/80
Hypotensive BP
<90/60
Treatment
lifestyle change of weight loss, regular exercise, smoking cessation, and maintaining low sodium or low salt diet; medications
