Why do we teach grammar?
- Expanding learners’ resources for making meaning.
- Providing tools for exploring how language works.
- They will know how to understand text.
What is a clause?
a group of words that includes a verb and usually a subject of the verb.
- A sentence.
What are the 4 functions of clauses?
> Statement – to provide information.
e.g. I went to the zoo.
• Question – to request information.
e.g. Did you go to the zoo?
• Command – to direct
e.g. Go to the zoo. Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200.
• Exclamation – for emphasis
e.g. Go to the zoo! I went to the zoo! Wow!
Non standard syntax =
incorrect grammar
ES1 focuses on
making a simple sentence. One independent clause.
“One Friday after school, I went home.”
S1 focuses on
compound sentence. 2 or more clauses.
“Frogs have smooth slimy skin & toads have rough dry skin.”
S2 focuses on
complex sentence = independent clause and dependent clause.
“There would be less pollution, if we used fewer plastic bags”.
coordinating conjunctions= for, and, neither, nor, but, yet, or, so.

COMPOUND-COMPLEX SENTENCES
A combination of compound and complex structures
