What is spelling?
The ability to construct words using standard conventions.
What is orthographic knowledge?
Understanding of how letters are used to form words.
Based on visual analysis & knowledge of spelling conventions.
- Reading & writing
- Talking about analysing words ( metalanguage).
What is morphology?
The meaningful units that make up a word.
What is a morpheme?
A smallest unit of a word with meaning.
Dog- house
Fire- house
Why is standard Australian English seemingly unpredictable?
It is a mix of old english, latin & french.
Orthographic knowledge involves 4 types of knowledge, what are they?
- Phonological
- Visual
- Morphemic
- Etymology
What is phonological knowledge?
The names of letters, sounds they represent and the ways they can be grouped for different sounds.
eg vowels, etc, word families ound, itch
What is visual knowledge?
Recalling and comparing the appearance of words,
e. g. saw/was, come/came, there/here.
Recognising what letters look like & how to write them.
What is morphological knowledge?
Using morphemes to help with spelling of words.
E.g playing, playground
What are compound words?
a combination of two or more words that function as a single unit of meaning.
Sea+shell
Sea+shore
What are prefixes?
Prefixes are added to the beginning of a word to make a new word.
E.g. mis+take
Un + happy
Over+ work
What are suffixes?
Letters added to the end of a main word are called suffixes.
‘ed’, ‘ful’, ‘ly’, ‘ing’,
What is Etymological knowledge?
Roots of the word, origins & history.
What is a free morpheme?
a morpheme (or word element) that can stand alone as a word. E.g. Dog, house,
What is a bound morpheme?
is a morpheme that appears only as part of a larger word
E.g. Start-ed ( free-bound)
E.g. Un-tidy (bound- free)
