What is assessment?
The collection and evaluation of evidence of a student’s learning.
What is the purpose of assessments?
- It identifies their strengths and weaknesses.
- To inform future teaching, for reporting.
- Identifies their understanding.
What is a standardised assessment?
Standardised: students take the same test under the same conditions.

What are the 3 types of assessments?
- Assessments For learning: identify specific goals & outcomes. (Formative)
- Assessments AS learning: Students use assessment data to reflect on, strengths/weaknesses & limitations to set new goals (metacognition).
- Assessments OF learning: Teacher uses assessment data to inform teaching plans, content & student activity (Summative).
What is the ‘Best Start Assessment?’
A standardised literacy & numeracy test for all students starting kindergarten.
What does the ‘Best Start Assessment’ reveal?
- What the child knows & can already do.
- Shows what the child needs to learn next.
What does the ‘Best Start Assessment’ not reveal?
- What motivates and interests the child.
- How long a students will take to move along the continuum.
What can BSA teach us about assessments?
- Do assessments regularly to keep track of child’s progression.
- Most standardised tests do not assess depth of learning.
