Ultradian rhythms Flashcards
Ultradian rhythms
cycle takes less than 24 hours to complete
what does this cycle alternate between
REM (rapid eye movement) and NREM (non-rapid movement)
how many sleep stages are there
5
how does the cycle begin
The cycle starts at light sleep, progressing to deep sleep and then REM sleep, where brain waves speed up and dreaming occurs
stages 1 and 2
light sleep
brainwave patterns are slower and more rhythmic
breathing and heart rate slows
stages 3 and 4
deep sleep
slow wave sleep
stages associated with slower delta waves
stage 5
REM sleep
brain activity resembles that of an awake person
dreaming occurs
evaluation weakness
individual differences Tucker et al. (2007) found significant differences between participants in terms of the duration of each stage, particularly stages 3 and 4 (just before REM sleep)
