Structure and function Flashcards
sensory neuron
found in receptors- eyes ears tongue skin
convey information about sensory stimuli
relay neuron
found in the spinal cord and brain and allow sensory and motor neurone to communicate
motor neuron
found in CNS
control muscle movements
sensory neuron function
carry nerve impulses to spinal cord and brain which are translated into sensations– vision hearing touch
motor neuron function
when stimulated they release neurotransmitters that bind to the receptors on muscles to trigger a response
the cell body is also known as
the control centre
dendrite
receive signals from other neurons or sensory receptors cells
synaptic transmission pathway
1- electrical impulse passed down axon of neuron
2- once at end of axon it is received by another neuron
3- crosses the synaptic gap
4- in the axon terminal are synaptic vesicles which contain neurotransmitters
5- when electrical impulses reaches synaptic vesicles they release their contents of neurotransmitters
neurotransmitter role
carry signal across synaptic gap which binds to receptor on post-synaptic cell which becomes activated= this produces excitatory or inhibitory effects
excitatory neurotransmitters
make post-synaptic cell more likely to fire
inhibitory neurotransmitters
make post-synaptic cell less likely to fire
example of excitatory neurotransmitters
noradrenaline
