may be associated with extra-intestinal manifestations eg. arthropathy, skin manifestations, ocular manifestations

diarrhoea, urgency or tenesmus and blood in the stools

how to rule out UC
A
faecal calprotectinn
very high negative predictive value

acute severe ulcerative colitis
A
presence of 6 or more bloody stools per day plus at least one of:
- temp above 37.8
- HR > 90
- haem <105
- ESR >30

dietary measures in UC
A
not effective at controlling inflaammation in active UC
processed foods, diets rich in refined sugars and low in fibre may inncrese the risk of developing an IBD and may increase the risk of flares in UC
