Ulcerative Colitis
* Signs & Symptoms

A
  • Primary
  • diarrhoea with blood
  • hallmark of UC
  • +/- mucus
  • abdominal pain
  • Secondary
  • weight loss
  • arthralgia
  • anorexia
  • nausea and vomiting
  • Onset typically gradual
  • followed by periods of spontaneous remission and subsequent
    relapses

* Diagnosis

A
  • Dx via colonoscopy and biopsy
  • Supportive Inx
  • raised CRP and ESR
  • elevated faecal lactoferrin and calprotectin
  • increased IP
  • active UC associated with ↑ IP (Salim and Soderholm, 2011)
  • increased IP can also occur in remission
  • 28.1% compared with 6.1% in healthy controls (P < 0.001)
