UKs Role in International Conflict Flashcards
What is mediation?
Bringing together the different sides in a dispute. All sides must be involved otherwise it will not work.
E.g. Tony Blair was the Middle East Peace Envoy.
What are sanctions?
Penalties for breaking rules in international situations. They put pressure on countries and can involve not letting a country sell goods or not selling military equipment.
E.g. the UK imposed sanctions on Russia after its invasion of Ukraine.
What is force in the context of conflict resolution?
Force is a last resort when mediation and sanctions have failed. It can involve direct military intervention, supporting other fighters, or enforcing no-fly zones.
E.g. UK military intervention in Iraq, 2003.
How did the UK respond to the conflict in Sierra Leone?
In the 1990s, during a civil war, the UK sent soldiers as part of a UN ceasefire mission, evacuated foreign citizens in May 2000, and trained the Sierra Leone National Army.
They also trained soldiers to free hostages.
