What is mediation?

A

Bringing together the different sides in a dispute. All sides must be involved otherwise it will not work.

E.g. Tony Blair was the Middle East Peace Envoy.

What are sanctions?

A

Penalties for breaking rules in international situations. They put pressure on countries and can involve not letting a country sell goods or not selling military equipment.

E.g. the UK imposed sanctions on Russia after its invasion of Ukraine.

What is force in the context of conflict resolution?

A

Force is a last resort when mediation and sanctions have failed. It can involve direct military intervention, supporting other fighters, or enforcing no-fly zones.

How did the UK respond to the conflict in Sierra Leone?

A

In the 1990s, during a civil war, the UK sent soldiers as part of a UN ceasefire mission, evacuated foreign citizens in May 2000, and trained the Sierra Leone National Army.

They also trained soldiers to free hostages.
