What are the Geneva Conventions?
The Geneva Conventions are a set of international humanitarian laws accepted by most countries. They set out laws about prisoners of war, wounded, sick, and civilians in war zones. Chemical and biological weapons are also forbidden.
What is International Humanitarian Law?
International Humanitarian Law consists of rules agreed by different countries to protect human rights.
What is the International Criminal Court?
The International Criminal Court was set up in 2002 and is based in The Hague, Netherlands. It is independent from the UN and has 123 members. China, Russia, and the US are not signed up. It hears cases of serious crimes like genocide and war crimes.
What is the International Court of Justice?
The International Court of Justice, known as the ‘World Court’, is a UN organization based in The Hague. It aims to settle legal disputes between nations. Only states can bring cases, not individuals.
What happens if a country is ruled against by the International Court of Justice?
Countries that are ruled against do not have to accept the ruling and cannot be forced to comply.
How many judges serve in the International Court of Justice?
The International Court of Justice has 15 judges who serve for 9 years.
