Urban Village
Distinctive area of a city (usually residential), which has a unique function or character which is influenced by a particular community

Suburbanisation
Movement of people, employment and services away from the central city, such that the city expands outwards. Driving dynamic from 1950s-1990s EG KELLYVILLE, GLENMORE PARK
Exurbanisation
Growth of low-density, semi-rural settlements beyond the built-up outer edge of the city. Driven by usually affluent people moving from the city to semi-rural areas in search of the rural lifestyle but wish to keep their connections to the city. EG - GROWTH OF BOWRAL, 1.5H SW SYDNEY BY CAR
Counter-Urbanisation
Decline in the total population/growth of large metropolitan areas, and the development of smaller urban centres. Driven by technology, economy, lifestyle, demographics + transport. Rural housing stat. EG BYRON BAY, ORANGE, DUBBO AS REGIONAL CENTRES
Decentralisation
Planned government initiatives to provide employment opportunities away from cities. EG EVOCITY CAMPAIGN - connection of Albury, Tamworth, Dubbo + Bathurst (regional centres) and employment opportunities. Often also govt grants to relocate, govt depts moved (Primary industries –> orange)
Urban Consolidation
Process of constraining further development + population growth to within the boundaries of pre-existing urban areas rather than expanding outwards into suburban/greenfield areas. Primary current dynamic, EG ASQUITH + MT COLAH ALONG TRAIN LINE. Involves rezoning consolidation stat
Urban Decay
Deterioration or decline in activity, productivity, or use of an area resulting in derelict landscapes, empty buildings, or remnant populations of LIEs, unemployed + aged ppl in poor circumstances. Driven by economic restructuring or social make-up change. EG BARANGAROO PREV
Urban Renewal
Transformation + redevelopment of disused/underused brownfield areas through adaptive reuse (conversion of a structure to make it suitable for a different purpose) or replacement (demolition and replacement with a new structure for a new purpose). EG BARANGAROO
Gentrification PART OF RENEWAL, NOT ITS OWN DYNAMIC
Renewal of inner city residential areas where dilapidated houses are purchased, refurbished and occupied by M-HIEs.
Spatial Exclusion
The segregation of ‘undesirable’ groups such as LIEs from communities of wealthy urban dwellers who wish to protect their luxury lifestyle.
