Geo Skills Flashcards
Transects
Straight lines or narrow sections through an object or natural feature, along which measurements or observations are made
Precis Maps
Provide a clear summary of the area that a map portrays
Latitude
Distance of a point north or south of the equator. Horizontal line. Written first: N(degrees)S(degrees)
Longitude
Distance of a point east or west of the prime meridian. Vertical line. Written second - E(degrees)W(degrees)
Scale
Relationship between distance on a map + corresponding distance on the ground
↑map scale = ↓reference number = ↑detailed
E.g., 1:10 scale is larger than 1:250000 scale
Direction
Uses cardinal (NSEW) and (NE SE SW NW) points + measurements
Bearing
Direction in degrees clockwise from North
Eastings
Horizontal axis - increase from East to West
Northings
Vertical axis - increase from South to North
Contours

Relief
Shape of the land
Local relief
Difference between the highest and lowest points in a given area
Gradient
Rise/Run
Vertical exaggeration
Vertical scale/horizontal scale
Density
The amount of something within a given space. number of feature/area
