UbiComp Flashcards
what is ubicomp?
a paradigm where computing is made to appear anytime and everywhere, users interact with computers in everyday objects such as fridges or eyeglasses
processing power so distrubted that computers per se effectively disappear
what 3 devices did weiser propose?
tabs - post it note sized wearable devices (smart watch)
pads - devices the size of paper (tablets)
boards - devices the size of a blackboard (SMART board)
what inputs/outputs might a ubicomp scenario have?
inputs: senses, pressure, environmental sensors, physiological measurements
outputs: thermal, ambient display, all senses
what is nomadic computing? what are some issues that arise?
a phenomenon within ubicomp
the ability to perform computing and communication whilst moving from place to place, independant of:
- location
- motion
- computing platform
- comm. device
- comm. bandwidth
issues:
- disconnecting
- variable connectivity
- variable routes through a network
- variable requirements
- resource replication
- users need to become aware of the changing environments
- environment needs to become aware of nomadic users
what is wearable computing?
a phenomenon within ubicomp
intergration of computing into clothing, such as glasses, watches or jacket
what is context recognition?
the field that tries to infer contextual data from sensor data
can classify use activities such as walking, standing still, driving etc
or emotions
sensors can be put on clothing or other devices
what is affective computing?
the study of user interfaces that sense people’s emotions and adapts in a suitable manner
use machine learning to classify emotions
e.g. angry customers may get through faster,
exploitable by faking
what is activity recognition?
the study of techniques for automatically detecing users activities
applications include home care, security
can be single user or multi user
can use gps, accelerometers, videos
