U3 KA1: Ecosystems Flashcards
1
Q
- Biodiversity
A
- the total variation among living organisms within a region.
2
Q
- Producers
A
- make food using inorganic materials and an abiotic energy source.
3
Q
- Consumers
A
- obtain food by feeding on producers or other consumers.
4
Q
- Herbivores
A
- only eat plant material.
5
Q
- carnivores
A
- only eat other animals.
6
Q
- Omnivores
A
- eat both plant and animal.
7
Q
- Predator
A
- hunts, kills and feeds on other organisms (prey).
8
Q
- Prey
A
- hunted on, killed and fed on by other organisms (predator).
9
Q
- Habitat
A
- where an organism lives.
10
Q
- Population
A
- all the members of one species living in a habitat.
11
Q
- Community
A
- All plants, animals and microorganisms living in a habitat.
12
Q
- Species
A
- a group of organisms that can interbreed to produce fertile offspring.
13
Q
- Food Chain
A
- diagram showing the feeding relationships between different organisms.
14
Q
- Food Web
A
- shows ecosystems which have a large number of interconnected food chains.
15
Q
- Ecosystem
A
- all the organisms living in a particular habitat and non-living components with which they interact.
16
Q
- Niche
A
- the role and organism plays within its ecosystem.
17
Q
- How does competition in ecosystems occur?
A
- when organisms require the same or similar resources that are in short supply.
18
Q
- Interspecific Competition
A
- occurs between individuals of different species that require similar resources within an ecosystem, (eg. Lions and Hyenas).
19
Q
- Intraspecific Competition
A
- occurs between individuals of the same species who require all the same resources. This competition is much more intense.
