U1 KA6: Respiration Flashcards
1
Q
What is Respiration?
A
- process where the chemical energy stored in glucose is released, through a series of enzyme controlled reactions.
2
Q
3 cellular activities that require Energy.
A
- Cell Division.
- Active Transport.
- Muscle Contraction.
3
Q
What is ATP?
A
- Adenosine tri-phosphate,
(1 adenosine molecule, 3 phosphate molecules).
4
Q
What is Aerobic Respiration?
A
- respiration occurring in the presence of oxygen.
5
Q
What is Anaerobic Respiration/Fermentation ?
A
- respiration occurring in the absence of oxygen.
6
Q
Stage 1
A
- Glucose is broken down into 2 pyruvate molecules.
- this takes place in the cytoplasm and 2 ATP molecules are released.
7
Q
Stage 2 (Presence of Oxygen)
A
- pyruvate travels to mitochondria where it is broken down into carbon dioxide and water.
- lots of ATP molecules are released.
8
Q
Stage 2 (Absence of Oxygen) (Animal Cells)
A
- pyruvate is broken down into lactic acid.
- occurs in Cytoplasm.
9
Q
Stage 2 (Absence of Oxygen) (Plant Cells)
A
- pyruvate is broken down into ethanol and carbon dioxide.
- occurs in Cytoplasm.
