U3: 18- Cerebral Cortex Flashcards
The cerebrum is split into two halves called cerebral hemispheres. What joins the two hemispheres?
Corpus callosum
Describe the corpus callosum.
A bundle of nerve fibres that allow communication to flow between the two hemispheres
Name the three types of functional area in the brain.
- sensory area
- association area
- motor area
Where do the sensory areas of the brain receive information from?
From sensory nerves coming from the body’s receptors
What is the purpose of the association areas?
They analyse and interpret the impulses received in the sensory areas
What is the purpose of the motor areas?
They receive information from the association areas and send impulses along motor nerves to the appropriate effectors
What jobs does the cerebral cortex carry out?
Conscious thought, controls personality, intelligence, imagination
If a person has their corpus callosum cut how is this person described?
A split-brain patient
Whatever areas are found on the left cerebral hemisphere are also found on the right cerebral hemisphere. What is the only type of area that is found on one side only?
Speech motor area
If a patient who has the corpus callosum in tact and the speech motor area on the left, what will they be able to see and say they can see if they have orange in front of the right eye and blue in front of the left eye?
Both blue and orange
If a patient who has the corpus callosum cut and the speech motor area on the left, what will they be able to see and say they can see if they have orange in front of the right eye and blue in front of the left eye?
See: both orange and blue
Say they can see: orange only
If a person is asked to point with their right hand to an object, from which cerebral hemisphere will this message be sent to control the right hand?
Left cerebral hemisphere
