What is technology?
The creation of tools/objects that extend our natural abilities and alter our social env.
What are some examples/eras of tech, use course material.
1) The wheel & fire –> Simple tools and inventions
2) Industrial revolution –> steam engine lead to economic growth. Transition to machinery
3) Digital revolution –> Internet allows more resource availability. Rise of socials, ppl can communicate
4) AI revolution –> allows algorithms to solve complex processes.
What is technological determinism theory?
Social change is initiated by the technology (Ex: invention of the computer → tech takes on a life of its own after it has been introduced and society simply reacts to the new tech)
What is future shock?
Feeling overwhelmed and anxious because of fast changes in tech and society (Ex: feeling lost and struggling to keep up with social media/updates)
What is hyperculture?
A state where culture is rapidly changing and evolving due to the influence of tech, globalization, and interconnectedness.
What is technosis?
Being unable to cope without our gadgets.
Implications - addiction, attachment, effects on social, emotional, psychological state of mind.
What is William Ogburns cultural log theory and cultural lag?
Resisting tech change:
Cultural beliefs and norms may take time to catch up, resulting in a lag between technological advancements.
Some will accept a new technology / idea, others will resist changes (Ex: luddites - ppl resistant to tech change), creating a cultural lag.
Using examples for class, what are some advantages/disadvantages of robots?
Advantages: Robots assist in assembly - things humans can’t do, less strain on humans, and tests difficult conditions.
Disadvantages: Anxiety, social pressure, provides instant gratification which makes us addicted, frontal lobe development impacted, easy to procrastinate and rely on tech, and desensitizes info
