Conformity
type of social influence involving a change in belief or behaviour in order to fit in with a group
Social norms
accepted standards of behaviour of social groups
- behaviour which fulfils these norms is conformity
Zimbardo’s prison experiement
- aimed to see how much ordinary people would conform to social roles
- showed people settled into social roles quickly
- experiment only lasted 6 days as abuse was happening
Conclusions from Zimbardo’s experiment
- there are individual differences but in general when given a position of authority, people tend to control and abuse it
- in UPS, it could be likely people with power could abuse it

- participants agreed with the wrong answers so not to be shamed or thought of differently
- trainees in UPS may all act in the same way so not to raise attention of others and to fit in

Self discipline
the ability to apply yourself in the correct manner, including controlling yourself and your feelings

- taking pride in appearance
- punctuality and time managment
- relability
- composure
- positive attitude
- performing duties to the best ability
Consequences of a lack of self discipline
- being judged by others being questioned if youre good at your job
- someone could end up being hurt or killed
- less likely to be picked for promotion
