U2 Cells: Ls 05: Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes Flashcards
What is the difference of DNA in the eukaryotic cells and the prokaryotic cells?
The DNA in the eukaryotic cell is with the multiple strands in a straight line but the DNA in the prokaryotic cell has a circular strand.
What types of organisms are eukaryotes and prokaryotes?
The eukaryotes are multicellular or unicellular organisms whereas the prokaryotes are always unicellular.
What are the components of the prokaryotic cells?
The components of the prokaryotic cells are the plasma membrane, cytoplasm, DNA and Ribosomes.
What is a prokaryote?
A prokaryote is a simple, single-celled organism that lacks a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles and consists of a single open space. Most prokaryotic DNA is found in a central region of the cell and typically consists of a single large loop called a circular chromosome.
Does the bacteria have a cell wall?
However, Most bacteria are surrounded by a rigid cell wall made from peptidoglycan, a polymer composed of linked carbohydrates and small proteins. The cell wall provides an extra layer of protection, helps the cell maintain its shape, and prevents dehydration.
What is a capsule?
Many bacteria also have an outermost layer of carbohydrates called the capsule. The capsule is sticky and helps the cell attach to surfaces in its environment.
