U2 Cells: Ls 03: The cell membrane Flashcards
What is a phospholipid?
Phospholipid is a lipid that involves a phosphate group. They are not going to be attracted to the water and neither the water is going to be attracted to them which means that they are hydrophobic. The phosphate head of the phospholipid is hydrophilic which means they get attracted to water.
What are Amphipathic molecules?
Amphipathic molecules are the type of molecules that have both hydrophobic and hydrophilic parts in them. Ex: Phospholipids
What is a mosaic model?
A mosaic model is a picture model made up of a bunch of different components of all different colours.
What type are the phospholipids are in the cell membrane?
The phospholipids are bilayers of cell membrane.
What are lipids?
Lipids are a broad group of organic compounds which include fats, waxes, sterols, fat-soluble vitamins and others. They help with moving and storing energy, absorbing vitamins and making hormones.
What is a plasma membrane?
A plasma membrane is a tiny bubble of membrane, that defines the borders of cells and allows them to interact with their environment in a controlled way.
What are essential to make a semipermeable barrier?
It requires lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates to create a semipermeable barrier.
What is a semipermeable barrier?
A semipermeable barrier is a wall-like substance for things to go in and out of the cell.
What is the use of lipids, proteins and carbohydrates?
Lipids, proteins and carbohydrates are used to create a semipermeable barrier and facilitate cross-membrane transport and cell communication.
