Typical Long Bone Flashcards
What are the two types of bone tissue?
Compact and spongy
Define compact bone and where it is located?
Is densely packed with calcified salt, which makes it strong and heavy. It is only found in the outer layer of bone.
Define spongy bone and where it is located?
Has many spaces within matrix, which are filled with bone marrow, the holes make it weaker and lighter. It’s found in the inside of our bones
How are bones classified? And what are the categories?
By their shape. Long bones, short bones, flat bones, and irregular bones.
Define epiphyses
Proximal and distal ends of long bones.
Define diaphysis
The shaft of long bones
What cavity is located within the diaphysis? And what does it contain?
Medullary cavity, which contains bone marrow, in adult bones it’s filled mostly with yellow bone marrow
Define yellow bone marrow
Bone marrow made of fat
Define red bone marrow
Bone marrow that contains Hematopoietic stem cells to produce new blood cells
Define epiphyseal growth plate and what it’s composed of
The junction between epiphysis and diaphysis. It’s composed of hyaline cartilage.
What happens to make the epiphyseal line
Once a skeleton is mature, cartilage is replaced by compact bone
Give example of long bone?
Femur (upper leg)
Tibia (lower leg )
Give example of short bone
Carpal (wrist)
Tarsal (ankle)
Give example of flat bone
Sternum
Ribs
Give example of irregular bones
Hip bones
Lumbar
