Joints Flashcards
What is a joint?
Joints are the location where bones come together
How are joints functionally classified?
It’s determined by the amount of mobility found between adjacent bones.
What are the three main classifications of joints?
Syntharthrosis
Amphirthrosis
Diarthrosis
Define syntharthrosis joint
Immobile joint
Define amphiarthrosis joint
Slightly moveable joint
Define diarthrosis joint
Freely moveable joint
What is the structural classification of joints based on?
It’s based on whether the articulating surfaces of he adjacent bones are directly connected by fibrous connective tissue or cartilage, or whether the articulating surfaces contact each other within a fluid filled joint cavity.
What are the three structural joint classifications?
Fibrous joint
Cartilaginous joint
Synovial joint
Define fibrous joint
Where the adjacent bones are united by fibrous connective tissue
Define sutures and what type of joint is it?
Joins most bones in the skull, a fibrous joint
Define syndemosis
Type of fibrous joint in which two Parallel bones are united to each other y fibrous connective tissue .
Define gomphosis
A specialized fibrous joint that anchors a tooth to its socket on the jaw
At cartilagenous joints, what happens in synchondrosis ?
Bones that are united by hyaline cartilage to form a synchondrosis
At cartilaginous joints, what happens to form a symphysis?
Bones are united by fibrocartilage to form a symphysis
Define synovial joint
The articulating surfaces of bones are not directly connected, but come into contact with each other within a joint cavity that is filled with lubricating fluid
