-HMS Illustrious arrived on 25th November with 100 tonnes of rice
-UK air force sent 200 tonnes of aid (medicine, food, water and doctors)
-Helicopters covered large areas of land to carry food and personnel
-Mandatory evacuation to 1 to 2 km inland could have reduced the number of deaths but the severity of the storm surge was not forecast
-Population show evidence of extreme resilience
-Prompt action by NGO’s and IGO’s
-UN recognised challenges of response immediately following the storm
-UK Government sent 2 navy ships with 200,000 tonnes of aid and the USA sent numerous ships and aircraft, as well as over 13,000 service personnel
