Types of sampling Flashcards
What is a population?
total group that you wish to draw conclusions about
What is a sample?
small selection of people from the population that will be used in the experiment
What is convenience sampling?
uses participants who are most available
What are some advantages of convenience sampling?
very quick and easy
= cheap
What are some disadvantages of convenience sampling?
bias and not true representation of the population
What is random sampling?
every member of the population has equal chance of being selected
What are the advantages of random sampling?
= everyone has equal chance
= no bias
What are the disadvantages of random sampling?
= time consuming
= more expensive
What is stratified sampling?
population is divided into categories and participants are selected at random
What are the advantages of stratified sampling?
true representation of the population
= not bias
What are the disadvantages of stratified sampling?
very time consuming
= expensive
What is the control group?
group that do not receive the treatment (IV)
What is the experimental group?
group that receive the treatment (IV)
What is used to ensure both the control group and experimental group are similiar?
random allocation
