What is a case study?
in depth or detailed study on a person or a small group of people
What are the advantages of a case study?
provides detailed info
= collects data that other methods cannot
What are the disadvantages of a case study?
doesn’t allow for cause and effect r/ship conclusions
= results can be biased and hard to generalise
What is an observational study?
collecting data by watching and recording behaviour as it occurs
What are the advantages of an observational study?
provides info on behaviour in natural environment
What are the disadvantages of an observational study?
can be time consuming and expensive
= collects biased results
What is a self report?
participant’s response is either written or spoken to a series of questions or statements presented by the experimenter
= asked to comment their own thoughts and feelings on a series of questions
What are the advantages of a self report?
collects data about behaviour that cannot be directly observed
What are the disadvantages of a self report?
can be subjective or bias
What is subjective data?
person’s own opinion or interpretation on data
What is objective data?
info that can be directly observed or measured
What is primary data?
when the experimenter directly collects the data themselves
What is secondary data?
experimenter uses data collected by someone else
What is qualitative data?
descriptive, written or verbal comments on personal feelings and attitudes
What is quantitative data?
numbers of categories that can be measured, analysed and compared to other data
