Types of Reproduction Flashcards
What is asexual reproduction?
Reproducing without a parent
What is sexual reproduction?
Reproducing with two parents
Is asexual reproduction slow or quick?
Quick because it only needs one parent
Is sexual reproduction slow or quick?
Slow because it needs two parents
What does asexual reproduction produce?
Produces clones
What does sexual reproduction produce?
Different (not identical) offspring
What is there not in asexual reproduction?
No genetic variation
Only one type of cell division is used in asexual reproduction. What is it?
Mitosis
What is a zygote?
A fertilised egg
What does meiosis do?
Makes sperm and egg cells
Meiosis only occurs in the what?
Ovaries (f)
Testicles (m)
What is sperm in a plant?
Pollen
What is meiosis vital for?
To preserve the number of chromosomes
What is one difference between mitosis and meiosis?
Mitosis:
Cells divide once, 2 identical daughter cells, diploid number of chromosomes, occurs all over the body
VS
Meiosis:
Cells divide twice, 4 different daughter cells, haploid number of chromosomes, only occurs in the reproductive system
Mitosis
Growth and repair
