Protein Synthesis Flashcards
Where does translation happen?
Outside the nucleus
What happens in transcription?
Inside the nucleus, RNA polymerase attaches to a non-coding part of DNA. The enzyme separates the two strands of DNA. RNA polymerase moves along until it reaches the coding region of a gene. Adds complementary RNA nucleotides to the template strand. The RNA polymerase links the nucleotides together to form a strand of mRNA. This mRNA strand leaves the nucleus through a nuclear pore.
What is translation?
In the cytoplasm a ribosome attaches to the mRNA strand. A tRNA molecule pairs up with each codon. The ribosome joins together the amino acids carried by the tRNA molecules. This results in a polypeptide.
