Types of muscle work Flashcards
Primer mover
agonist
Antagonist
opposit side of joint to agonist
Agonist contracts (shortens) Antagonist?
relax (lengthen)
Synergist
inhibits movements not required
Movers of elbow flexion
Agonist/Prime movers: Biceps brachii & Brachialis
Antagonist: Triceps & Anconeus
Synergist: Pronator teres
Role of fixators
Muscles that stabilise proximal joints (help keep them in the right position) while more distal joints move
Types of muscle work
Concentric
Eccentric
Isometric
Concentric muscle work
Isotonic Shortening
Where agonist muscles shorten to produce movement against a resistance (& gravity
Eccentric muscle work
Isotonic Lengthening
Muscle lengthens to control movement
Static muscle work
Isometric - muscles are working but are not changing length
Cog-wheel rigidity
Parkinson’s disease
Muscle tone is interrupted by a series of jerks
Muscle atrophy
state where the muscles are wasting away
Disuse atrophy
nerve impulses are disrupted to the inactive muscle
Denervation atrophy
nerve supply is entirely cut from the muscle
muscle fibres are replaced by fibrous tissue.
This is irreversible when it happens
Duchenne muscular dystrophy
Progressive disorder of childhood.
Passed onto boys from their unaffected mothers.
It is incurable.
