Types of Muscle Flashcards
What are the three types of muscles?
involuntary, voluntary and cardiac muscle
What is the voluntary muscle - or skeletal or striated?
you can choose to move
long, cylindrical cells - run parallel to each other
multi nucleate - lots of nuclei
striated - we can see bands of actin and myosin
e. g. bicep twitch - fast twitch
e. g. erecetor spiunae - posture - slow twitch
What is the involuntary muscle or smooth muscle?
thin cells - looks like leaves
only have one nucleus per cell
slow twitch - respire aerobically - contract and relax slowly
e. g. control of pupil size
e. g. controls diameter of blood vessels - vasodilation
What is the cardiac muscle?
branched muscle fibres - looks like peppa pig tunnel for rabbits
some banding - striation
uninucleate - one nucleus per cell
muscle fibres connected by intercalated discs
some striations
e.g. pumps bloog
myogenic - can contract on its own
