Reflexes Flashcards
What is a reflex?
a rapid response to a stimulus without conscious control
What is the process of a response to stimulus?
stimulus - receptor - sensory neuorne - relay neurone - motor neurone - effector
Give an example of a stimulus and effector
stimulus = object approaching eye
effector = muscle - orbicularis oculi muscle
What are the advantages of a reflex?
helps organisms avoid damage
very fast - you don’t even need to think about it
doesnt need to be learned - protects infants e.g. blinking, knee jerk reflex
What is the knee jerk reflex?
straightens your leg if your quadraceps are stretched
helps to keep your balance
stretch receptors detect stretch - nerve impulse to along sensor neurone - to motor neuorne and then effector
