Apical Dominance Flashcards
What are the parts of the stem
apical bud
lateral bud
leaves
What is the apical bud?
it is at the top of the stem which produces auxins - plant hormones
What do auxins do?
they will promote growth at the apical bud
they inhibit growth at the laterbal buds
therefore, plant grows taller and doesnt compete with itself
What is the apical bud dominant over?
lateral buds
What happens to the auxins concentration with distance from apical bud?
it decreases
lateral buds are then less inhibited
What happens if we remove the apical bud?
less auxins are produced
lateral buds are not inhibited - they start to develop
the plant becomes bushy
if auxin is added to top of cut stem, apical dominance continues
