types of long term memory✅ Flashcards
what are the 3 types?
1- episodic memory
2- semantic memory
3- procedural memory
1️⃣ episodic memory:
what stuff does it store?
why are these memories so complex?
what do you have to do to recall them?
events / episodes in our lives
they’re time- stamped so you remember when they happened.
they involves swerve elements like ppl, places, objects
make a conscious effort
2️⃣ semantic memory:
what dos it store knowledge of?
why is it less personal?
the world
memories a lot of ppl share , there not Time stamped
3️⃣ procedural memory:
what does it save memories for? eg?
does recall happened with or without effort?
actions and skills eg how to ride a bike , driving
no effort required, remember these skills naturally, no conscious awareness required
AO3
✅ strengths
✅ episodic memory is that its supported by case study evidence ( HM and Clive wearing)
✅brain scan studies show different LTM stores
✅identifying different LTM stores has real life applications
AO3
❌weaknesses
❌ problems with clinical evidence , difficult to generalise from these case studies
❌ tulvings approach is that there may only be two types of LTM - important we distinguish the difference between semantic and episodic memories
