⭐️ the working memory model✅ Flashcards
what two psychologist introduced this model of memory?
Baddeley and Hitch
what is it a model of?
how many parts does it have?
what are the 4 parts?
the STM
4
central executive, episodic buffer, phonological loop, visuo-spatial sketchpad
what does the central excecutive do?
what are these systems called?
what is the capacity like?
monitors incoming data and allocates them to the systems
the slave systems
limited storage capacity
what is the role of the phonological loop?
what is it subdivided into?
processes auditory info and preserves it in the order it arrives
> the phonological store = stores words you hear
articulatory process = allows maintenance rehearsal
what Is the visuo- spatial sketchpad?
what does it subdivided into?
stores visual and spatial info
> the visual cache= stores visual data
inner scribe = records arrangement of objects
what is the episodic buffer?
what does it intergrete?
how does it record things?
temporary storage of info
visual, spatial, and verbal info from other stores
in events/ episodes … links to the LTM
AO3- WWM:
✅ 2 strengths
✅ the case of KF supports separate STM stores. shallice and Warrington studied a brain damaged patient who struggled to process verbal info but could do visual properly. This shows that there are separate STM components for visual information (VSS) and verbal information (phonological loop).
✅The working memory applies to real-life tasks:
- reading (phonological loop)
- problem solving (central executive)
- navigation (visual and spatial processing)
increases the external validity and the mundane realism
AO3- WWM:
❌ 2 weakness?
❌ lack of clarity over the central executive - the capacity of the CE has never been ,measured - critics claim the CE is unsatisfactory since it doesnt really explain anything… some believe it may have operate components this means it isnt fully explained
❌ Working memory only involves STM, so it is not a comprehensive model of memory (as it does not include LTM). some m ay prefer the multi store model as it involves the LTM
