types of light Flashcards
whats the difference between incandescence and luminescence
incandescence the emission of light from an object due to high temperatures, while luminescence is the emission of light without the involvement of heat
what is electric discharge
the flow of electricity through a medium such as gas
-> ie sodium vapour bulbs
what are the 4 types of luminescence?
1) fluorescence
2) bioluminescence
3) phosphorescence
4) chemiluminescence
what is fluorescence?
an object absorbing UV light to immediately release the energy as visible light!
note: 5 times more efficient than incandescent bulbs, because incandescent bulbs loose 95% of there energy on heat.
an example of fluorescence?
sodium and mercury bulbs
what is phosphorescence?
light that is emitted due to the expose of a source of UV. continues to emit after the absence of UV
-> ie: glow in the dark
what is chemiluminescence?
production of light as a result of a chemical reaction
-> glow sticks
what is bioluminescence?
production of light within a living organism as a result of a chemical reaction
->firefly
is the sun an incandescent light source?
yes, due to the fac that fusion reactions take place at the sun and create an abduance of heat. as well, solar energy is another form of heat energy, which produces light!
