plane mirrors Flashcards
What is shadowcasting?
Shadowcasting or creating shadows, are based on an objects location between the source and screen rather than the object.
–> the reason why small objects have large shadows.
What is fermat;s principle?
Light follows the path that will take the least time to go.
–> speed is constant
What are the 2 laws of reflection?
1) the incident ray, reflected ray, and the normal always lie on the same plane.
2) the angle of reflection is always equal to the angle or incidence
What LOST does the plane mirrors ALWAYS produce?
L: same (di=do)
O: upright (unless presented inverted)
S: same (hi-ho)
T: Virtual
What are virtual images?
An image in which light does not actually
arrive at or come from the image location
(images formed from an imaginary intersection of rays)
What are real images?
An image that can be seen on a screen as a result of light rays actually converging.
Why does writing look weird in plane mirrors?
Lateral inversion, where it is horizontally “flipped”
Reflection and Stealth Technology
How did WWII planes avoid detection from radar waves?
1) Paint
-> Absorb a lot of energy from radar waves
2) Shape
-> Flat and sharp edges made it so that incomming radar rays would not hit perpendicular to these surfaces, therefore it would not reflect back (the rays)
What is reflection?
The change in direction of a light raw, when it bounces off a surface
What is specular reflection?
A virtual image formed off of a smooth surface
What is diffuse reflection
A virtual image formed off of a irregular or dull surface
Which colours reflect more than other colours?
Light object colours reflect more than dark coloured objects.
