concave mirrors Flashcards
what is a concave mirror
coverging mirrors, reflecting surface curving inwards
application of concave mirrors
-> usually used for what?
-> LOST?
usually refered to as shaving mirrors or makeup mirrors because it enlarges the object (makes it easier to see details)
–> however objects usually inverted, unless its between F and V.
what is magnification?
the change in size of an optically produce image
what is spherical aberration?
when the object is ontop of the focal point, therefore a ray of light cannot go through, leading the the rays of light never converging, which then goes the not forming a virtual or real image
-> cannot draw the reflected ray, therefore the reflected ray never intersects
real life example of a concave mirror
-sky mirror (art piece by anish kapoor)
-Radar antennas
what does + and - mean of image distance and height?
If the image distance is negative, it means that the image is virtual
If the image height is negative, it means that the image is inverted relative to the height of the object.
if an image is inverted, smaller than the object and the IMAGE is closer to the mirror than the object, where is the object located?
BEYOND C
if the image is upright, larger and virtual, where is the object located?
Between F and V
If the image is real, larger, inverted and farther than the object, where is it located
between C and F
suppose that you are holding a shaving mirror 30 cm away from your face and the image is magnified and your face is upright. a classmate tells you that the focal length of the mirror is 25. explain to your classmate why that isnt possible
your face is upright and magnified, therefore you are between the focal point and the vertex. if your object is 30 cm away, your focal point cannot be 25, because that would imply that your object is beyond F or between f and C, which creates an inverted image.
