optical pheononma Flashcards
What is dispersion?
The seperation of white light into wavelengths (known as colours) due to the fact that each colour travels at a different speed, therefore having different index refractions
What is an example of dispersion?
a rainbow! where red has the llowest index refraction and violet has the high index refraction
How are rainbows created?
Refraction, dispersion, reflection, refraction
what is snells law?
The mathamatical way to represent the relationship between the ange of incident (cause) and the angle of refraction (consquence)
How does reflection and refractin play a role in making rainbows
refraction as the light goes from air to water (which then disperse into colours), reflection as it reflects from the backside of the water droplet, and then refraction as it exits.
Can you see rainbows if the sun is infront of you?
NO, only behind you.
What is apparent depth?
the depth the object appears to be due to refraction of light in a transparent medium. (either, bent/closer than what it is)
Objects in water always appear…
CLOSER
What are mirages?
the appearance of water within areas due to the refraction that happens from cool air to warm air. refraction + reflection create the illusion of water.
What are sun dogs
bright spots on both sides of the sun, appearing when the sun is low and near the horizon
What is shimmering
light being refracted as it passes through different temperations of air the medium (creating multiple virtual images)
