Types of interactions L5 Flashcards
What is symbiosis?
Relationship between two or more different species
What is predator-prey relations?
One species preys on another
What is consumer-producer relations?
One species produces a resource for another
What is competition?
Individuals must compete for resources
What is parasitism?
- One organism benefits, another is harmed (+,-)
- Parasites require hosts (usually specific)
What is commensalism?
- One species benefits, other is unaffected (+, 0)
What is mutualism? What are the two types of mutualism?
- Both species benefit (+,+)
- Obligatory mutualism
- Facultative mutualism
Obligatory mutualism
Each depends on the other exclusively
Facultative mutualism
Neither is wholly dependent upon the other
What is predations?
Both predators and prey have specialized
adaptations to assist with survival
What are two ways prey can hide from predators?
- Camouflage – blend in
- Mimicry – look like something worth avoiding!
Why are producers so important in producer-consumer relationships?
Producers must be present in order to sustain the needs of consumers - no producers = no consumers = no community
What are two types of competition?
- Interspecific
- Intraspecific
Interspecific
Different populations are competing for resources
Intraspecific
Individuals within the same population are competing for resources
What is succession?
Slow, orderly progressive replacement of the
community by another during an areas
development
What is a pioneer species?
First organisms to take root and build soil layer (e.g. lichen, moss, ferns, insects)
What is a climax community?
Stable end populations that developed
What is primary succession?
Community arising from no previous living
populations (i.e. barren land)
What is secondary succession?
Community begins to re-establish after partial destruction (e.g. forest fire, road paving, cultivation, cattle grazing)
