Population growth L3 Flashcards
What is a census?
Counting total in a small area
What is a sampling?
Representatively sample small area and multiply by total area - assumes random distribution
What are the three patterns of distribution?
- Clumped
- Uniform
- Random
What are factors that can effect a populations size?
- Natality (birth)
- Mortality (death)
- Immigration (coming)
- Emigration (leaving)
Open populations?
All four factors are functioning (natality, mortality, immigration, emigration)
Closed population
No migration
What does N stand for?
Number of individuals in a population
What does D-p stand for?
Population density
What does ∆N stand for
Change in population size
What does gr stand for?
Growth rate
What do you need to find the change in population?
(Birth + immigration) - (death + emigration) = ∆N
What does ∆t stand for?
Time
What does cgr stand for?
Per capita growth rate
How do you find per capita growth rate?
Change in population size (∆N), relative to the initial population size (N)
When is per capita growth rate most useful?
Effective when comparing populations of different sizes (e.g. school population vs.
community)
