Causes of change L2 Flashcards
What are the five agents of evolutionary change?
- Mutation
- Gene flow
- Non-Random mating
- Genetic drift
-Natural selection
Mutation
Change in DNA
Gene flow
Migration of alleles from one population to another
Non-random mating
Such as self-fertilization in flowers
Genetic drift
Change in allele frequencies in a small population due to a chance event
Natural selection
Selects for favourable variation
What causes mutations and what purpose do they serve?
- Can be created by mutagens or mistakes
during replication process - Can provide genetic diversity in a species and new alleles for a gene
What is the genetic drift bottleneck effect?
Catastrophic event resulting in only a few survivors in a population. Causing a change in allelic frequency for the following generations
What is the genetic drift founder effect?
Few individuals from a population start a new
population with a different allele frequency than the original population
