What are primary Industries?
Involves the extraction of raw materials
or natural resources from the ground or water
Called primary because the extraction of natural resources must happen before anything else can occur.
Examples: Forestry, mining, farming, fishing
What are secondary industries?
Manufacturing products by putting things together
These industries make products from the resources that were extracted by the primary industries.
examples : construction companies, auto assembly plants, factories
What are Tertiary industries?
Service industries that include wholesale and retail sales, distribution centres, the entertainment industry, insurance, media, doctors, lawyers, teachers, and others.
As Canada’s economy develops, tertiary industries are playing an increasingly greater role.
Service industries in Canada employ about 8 million people, compared with manufacturing industries, which employ 3.6 million people.
almost three times as many Canadians work in tertiary industries than in primary and secondary industries put together.
What are Quaternary Industries?
Focussed on the transmission of ideas. Fields within this sector include education (professors), government, information and communication technologies (ICT), cultural institutions, and scientific research.
