types of indicators Flashcards
what type of indicator is GDP
-Economic
-single measure
what is the GDP
-mean average income of a population/ group
-final value of output of goods and services inside a nation’s borders (an estimate of the nations income)
advantage of using GDP
-very easy to compare between countries
negatives of using GDP
-not reliability bc all earnings of every citizen must be accounted for, including informal sector work
-must be converted into US dollars to make comparisons (not accurate)
-GDP data must be manipulated more to factor in the cost of living in the country
-not good factor of
development because can bring disparity and environmental degredation which isnt “developing”
what type of indicator is the HDI
-Socio-economic
-composite indicator
what is the HDI
-comprised of 3 main factors: health, education, income
-ranks countries
-3 ingredients processed to produce a number between 0 and 1
positive of using HDI
-3 “ingredients” regarded as valid indicators of development
-holistic measure, including life expectancy, literacy rates, standard of living
-promote long term development as it encourages long term human development not just short term economic growth
negatives of using HDI as a type of indicator (reliable?)
-literacy rate and life expectancy information isnt always easy to record reliably due to people being displaced
-makes accurate data for hdi impossible to collect
negatives of using HDI as a type of indicator (environment)
-doesnt account environmental costs of development
-county might improve HDI by increasing industrial production
-harm long- term development
what type of indicator is the Gender Inequality Index (GII)
-composite index
-social development indicator
what is the GII
-Measures gender inequalities related to the three aspects of social and economic development.
-includes : reproductive health, empowerment and labour force
-range is 0 and 1, 0= perfect equality, 1=extreme gender inequality
positive of GII
-Useful for tracking changes in gender disparities to show whether a country is making any progress in reducing gender inequality
negative of GII (culture and holistic)
-cultures who do not not support equal rights will not count the GII as a valid development measurement
-doesn’t cover all aspects of gender inequality and doesn’t account for cultural, social or economic differences
what type of indicator is Environmental peformance index
-composite measure
-combines multiple factors e.g. health of people and state of ecosystem
what is the Environmental performance index
-links wealth/ health of people and management of natural environment
