Types of Hadith Flashcards
What is a Sahih Hadith?
- A Hadith classified as Sahih is one whose accuracy is absolutely beyond question.
- It is considered sound and trustworthy and is of the highest level of authenticity and reliability.
What are the key conditions for a Hadith to be classified as Sahih?
- Isnad (chain of transmitters) is full and unbroken.
- Each transmitter is a practicing Muslim with good character and sound memory.
- Matn (text) does not contradict the Quran, other authentic Hadiths, or the main principles of Islam.
- The Hadith does not contain expressions uncharacteristic of the Prophet (PBUH).
- It has no defects in either isnad or matn.
Which Hadith collections are universally accepted as Sahih?
The Hadith collections of Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslims are universally accepted as Sahih.
What is a Hasan Hadith?
- A Hasan Hadith is one whose text (matn) is true, but its isnad (chain of transmission) does not meet the strictest criteria of Sahih Hadith.
What are the two categories of Hasan Hadith?
- One with an ad containing a reporter who is “screened,” meaning no prominent scholar reported from him.
- One with an isnad containing a reporter who is reliable but slightly weaker in memory or preservation than those of Sahih Hadith.
What could cause a Hadith to be classified as Hasan instead of Sahih?
- A Hadith can be classified as Hasan instead of Sahih if a narrator in the chain of transmission has a slight memory weakness or if there is a missing link in the chain, but the Hadith is still considered authentic.
What is a Da’if Hadith?
- A Da’if (weak) Hadith is one whose text (matn) or transmission (isnad) is questionable, meaning its authenticity is not fully proven.
Are all Da’if Hadiths rejected?
All Da’if Hadiths aren’t rejected. For example, Abu Dawud included Da’if Hadiths in his Musnad to explain moral and religious issues when no stronger Hadiths were available.
What are some reasons a Hadith may be classified as Da’if?
- A narrator (rawi) is not well known for piety and reliability (mastur).
- A narrator has a weak memory, though his truthfulness is not questioned.
- Interruption in the isnad (chain of narrators), meaning a missing or unknown narrator.
What is a Maudoo Hadith?
- A Maudoo Hadith is fabricated.
- The sayings and actions falsely attributed to the Prophet (PBUH) that he never said or did.
Can a Maudoo Hadith be used to prove Islamic law?
Maudoo Hadiths are completely rejected and cannot be used as proof for any islamic law.
Give an example of a Maudoo Hadith.
Common people follow the religion of their rulers.” – This is an example of a fabricated Hadith.
What is a Mutawatir Hadith?
A Mutawatir Hadith has been narrated by many people from different generations, making it impossible for them to agree on a lie.
Give an example of a Mutawatir Hadith.
- The Last Sermon of the Prophet (PBUH) is an example of a Mutawatir Hadith.
What is an Ahad Hadith?
- Ahad Hadith are single or isolated Hadiths whose chain of narrators is broken, making them less widely accepted.
Are all Ahad Hadiths rejected?
- if the narrators are truthful and honest, Ahad Hadiths are accepted; otherwise, they are rejected.
