What is Tawaf and how is it performed?
- Tawaf is the circumambulation of the Ka‘ba seven times in an anticlockwise direction.
- It is a key ritual of Hajj and Umrah.
What is Tawaf-e-Qudoom, and when is it performed?
- Tawaf-e-Qudoom is the Tawaf of Arrival, performed when pilgrims enter Masjid al-Haram at the beginning of Hajj on the 8th of Zil Hajj.
What is Tawaf-e-Ziara (Tawaf Ifadah), and why is it important?
- Tawaf-e-Ziara, also known as Tawaf Ifadah or Tawaf Rukn, is an obligatory tawaf of Hajj.
- It is performed on the 10th of Zil Hajj, after the first stoning of Jamarat.
- If missed, the Hajj becomes invalid.
If a pilgrim cannot perform Tawaf-e-Ziara on the 10th of Zil Hajj, when can they perform it?
- It can be performed on the 11th or before noon of the 12th of Zil Hajj due to crowding.
What is Tawaf-e-Wida, and who is exempt from it?
- Tawaf-e-Wida (Farewell Tawaf) is wajib (imperative) and is performed before departing from Mecca.
- It is done after completing the Hajj rituals on the 13th of Zil Hajj.
- Exempted: Women who are menstruating or experiencing postnatal bleeding.
- If missed, an animal sacrifice is required as compensation.
What is Tawaf-e-Nafl, and when is it performed?
Tawaf-e-Nafl is a voluntary tawaf, performed for extra reward before or after Hajj.
How many circuits are required for each Tawaf?
- Seven circuits around the Ka‘ba are required for each Tawaf.
- Men should complete the first three at a hurried pace and the last four at a normal pace.
What action should pilgrims take upon reaching the Black Stone?
Upon reaching the Black Stone, Pilgrims should:
- Kiss the Black Stone (Hajar Aswad) if possible.
- If not possible, they should raise their hands in salutation and say “Allahu Akbar”.
Where should pilgrims pray after completing Tawaf?
After completing Tawaf:
- Pilgrims should offer two rak‘ahs of prayer behind Maqam Ibrahim, if possible.
- If it is crowded, they may pray anywhere in Masjid al-Haram.
What conditions must be met before starting Tawaf?
Before starting Tawaaf:
- Pilgrims must make intention (niyyat) before starting.
- They must be in a state of wudu (purification).
According to some scholars, Wudu is fard (compulsory) and mustahab (recommended) to other scholars, but it is safer to have wudu.
Is there a specific supplication during Tawaf?
No specific duas are required during Tawaaf except in the last stretch between Rukn-e-Yamani and Hajar Aswad.
Quranic Supplication (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:201):
- “O our Lord, give us the good in the world, and give us the good in the Hereafter, and save us from the torment of the Hell Fire.”
