Types of Guidance Flashcards

To understand the difference between 4 types of guidance and understand when each might be used.

1
Q

What is VERBAL guidance and when might it be used to best effect?

A

Talking to the performer about technique. This could be explaining key points, telling the performer how to improve or identifying faults. It could also be verbal praise and punishment.

Best used for autonomous performers who understand the verbal guidance and can ‘translate’ words into how they can adapt their skill performance.

Q

What is VISUAL guidance and when might it be used to best effect?

A

Guiding the performer in a way that they can see. Showing the performer. Could come in the form of demonstrations, expert videos, video of own performance, posters, diagrams.

Best used for learners in the Cognitive phase of learning to help them gain a mental picture. Useful if the coach ‘can’ produce accurate demonstrations to try and show the performer how to do it.

Q

What is MANUAL guidance and when might it be used to best effect?

A

Physically manipulating or supporting the performer to help them perform the skill. Could occur in the form of holding, moving or physically helping.

Best used for cognitive performers and when the skill is dangerous. The manual guidance reduces the danger as it creates a ‘safety’ as the performer knows the support is there.

Q

What is MECHANICAL guidance and when might it be used to best effect?

A

Mechanical guidance is where machinery or equipment is used to help guide the performance. Harnesses, treadmills, scrum machines are all examples.

Best used to prevent danger or sometimes to isolate movement skill and generate more resistance. Can be used with both beginners (to support) and experts (to challenge).
