Abilities Flashcards
To understand the difference between ability and skill and to know the difference between, and identify examples of, gross motor abilities and psycho-motor abilities.
How is an ability different from a skill?
Ability is innate
Ability is enduring and stable
Ability forms the foundation of skilled performance
Skill is learned
Skill is sport specific
Skill requires practice and its level can go up and down relatively quickly
Skill is the final product
What are GROSS MOTOR abilities?
A set of abilities where power, speed or strength are required.
Large muscular groups and muscular movement
What is DYNAMIC strength and can you identify a skill where it would be very useful to have some?
The ability to exert muscular force repeatedly over a period of time
egs of where it would be useful: Boxing, Judo, 400m, Rowing
What is STATIC strength and can you identify a skill where it would be very useful to have some?
The ability to exert maximum force against an external subject Where it would be useful: Rugby scrum, bench press
What is EXPLOSIVE strength and can you identify a skill where it would be very useful to have some?
The ability to use energy effectively for a short ‘burst’ of muscular effort.
egs of where it would be useful: high jump, rugby tackle, javelin thrown
What is STAMINA and can you identify a skill where it would be very useful to have some?
The ability to sustain effort using the cardiovascular system (aerobic)
egs of where it would be useful: long distance running, maintaining performance over 90 minutes in football
What is FLEXIBILITY and can you identify a skill where it would be very useful to have some?
The ability to produce a range of movement around joints.
egs of where it would be useful: Swimming, gymnastics, trampolining, goalkeeping
What is GROSS BODY CO-ORDINATION and can you identify a skill where it would be very useful to have some?
The ability to organise the actions of several parts of the body whilst moving
egs of where it would be useful: Judo, dribbling a football, playing a badminton shot
What is GROSS BODY EQUILIBRIUM and can you identify a skill where it would be very useful to have some?
The ability to maintain balance using proprioception and muscular contraction
egs of where it would be useful: Riding a tackle in football, maintaining good balance whilst playing a tennis backhand or a cricket drive.
What is TRUNK STRENGTH and can you identify a skill where it would be very useful to have some?
The ability to produce muscular power and strength from the core muscles, providing a stable base for limb movement
egs of where it would be useful: Swimming technique, football pass, hockey tackle and any other sports performance really
What are PSYCHO-MOTOR abilities?
A set of abilities where the mind and body combine to produce skills.
What is MULTI-LIMB CO-ORDINATION and can you identify a skill where it would be very useful to have some?
The ability to organise the movement of several limbs at the same time.
egs of where it would be useful: A basketball layup, badminton overhead clear,
What is RESPONSE ORIENTATION and can you identify a skill where it would be very useful to have some?
The ability to quickly make decisions on appropriate responses to the environment (see choice reaction time)
egs of where it would be useful: most open skills where a decision is needed based on the environment - saving a ball in goal, table tennis return of serve based on what spin is applied, playing the correct choice of cricket shot
What is REACTION TIME and can you identify a skill where it would be very useful to have some?
The ability to detect, compare and recognise stimuli.
egs of where it would be useful: sprint starts in athletics and swimming, adjusting to unexpected stimuli in game sports
What is SPEED OF MOVEMENT and can you identify a skill where it would be very useful to have some?
The ability to move body parts quickly
egs of where it would be useful: sprinting, running with the ball in hockey, football, rugby etc, producing a smash in badminton (arm speed), throwing a cricket or rounders ball (arm speed)
