Can you list the 3 ways that we control physical movement according to Adams.

Q

Open Loop Control

A

EMP ——— ACTION

There is no feedback as there isn’t time to act on it. The executive motor programme is initiated and then carried out.
Movements that use this type of control are often fast and ballistic movements where there is no time for feedback. The execution is smooth and mistakes during movement cannot be corrected.

eg. throwing a ball. Its over so quickly that we don’t have time to change the action mid-performance

Q

Closed Loop Level 1 - Muscular feedback

A

EMP———ACTION
——Muscles——-

During the muscular movement feedback from proprioception allows errors to be quickly corrected during the performance.

This control is at a subconcious level and there is a short feedback loop.

eg. Skiiing, riding a tackle in football - we correct our balance but don’t really think about it

Q

Closed Loop Level 2 - Muscles and Brain

A

EMP———–ACTION
——Muscles——-
——- Brain——-

Much slower execution as we are cognitively processing what is going on during the movement and making corrections. The brain becomes involved so the feedback is at a conscious level. As a result we can only control skills in this way where we have TIME to do so.

eg. repositioning your feet to catch a high ball in cricket happens as we watch the flight, think about where the ball may drop and control the movements to match teh environment.
