Memory Flashcards
To understand the memory model and its main components
1
Q
What are the key parts of the MULTI-STORE MEMORY model?
A
Short Term Sensory Stores (STSS)
Short Term Memory (STM)
Long Term Memroy (LTM)
2
Q
List 3 characteristics of the SHORT TERM SENSORY store.
A
- Vast amount of information gathered by VAK (visual, auditory and kinaesthetic sense organs)
- Stored for a very short period (upto 1 second)
- Relevant information is retained and sent to short term memory
- Irrelevant is discarded
3
Q
List 3 characteristics of SHORT TERM MEMORY
A
- information is stored for around 30 seconds
- 5-9 items are stored
- chunking can increase capacity
- sometimes called the ‘workspace’ or ‘working’ memory
- information is ENCODED (passed) to long term memory and decoded ‘from’ long term memory so that it can be compared and recognised
4
Q
List 3 characteristics of LONG TERM MEMORY
A
- vast storage space
- information stored for a long time
- executive motor programmes (EMP) are stored here
- information is DECODED (passed back) to Short Term Memory for evaluation and comparison to help produce a response
- repetition and retrieval will help the speed at which information can be used
5
Q
What strategies might help STM?
A
Chunking - combining pieces of information together
Concentration and selective attention whcih will reduce the information entering STM
Practice and experience
6
Q
What strategies might help LTM storage and retrieval?
A
Association - linking to other skills Simplicity of information Overlearning Uniqueness and emotional effect Repetition Chunking Imagery - mental rehearsal Meaning and Importance attached Enjoyment and reinforcement
